is a metamorphic rock that has been modified by heat and pressure below the Earth's surface. It is composed primarily of talc with varying amounts of other minerals.
The name soapstone is derived from its 'soapy' feel and softness. The rock is typically gray, blue, green or brown. Because of its composition, soapstone is usually very soft and moldable.
Soapstone is often used as an alternative natural stone since it is not easily stained, altered by acids or affected by heat. It was one of the first rocks to be quarried, and due to its special properties, it continues to be the 'material of choice' for a wide variety of uses.
