is a metamorphic rock, formed when limestone is modified by heat, pressure and chemical processes while buried deep below the Earth's surface. Under these conditions, the calcite - primary mineral composition -  in the limestone recrystallizes to form a rock that is a mass of interlocking calcite crystals.
Marble is usually a light colored rock. When it is formed from a limestone with very few impurities it is white; Depending on other minerals composing the stone, it can be blue, gray, pink, yellow or black.
The low hardness and solubility of marble allow it to be carved and polished to a high luster. This allows attractive pieces to be cut, polished and used for many different applications.
The majority of stones are quarried in Europe, specifically Italy, but it also comes from further afield with Africa and South America being regular sources.
